A Midsummer’s Night Dream receives Māori make-over

A Shakespeare favourite is getting a facelift
with a Maori twist as part of the
Globe’s Shakespeare summer season. Hania Douglas went out
to see what it was all about. One of Shakespeare’s most famous
works is getting a Maori facelift. Reuben Butler plays Puck, and he says there are
many Maori influences in this incarnation of the play. But Butler isn’t the lone
Maori of the cast. Te Kohe Tuhaka
is the associate director, and Maori designer extraordinaire
Shona Tawhiao also has a role. Butler says the message behind the
story is to stay true to yourself. The Globe’s Shakespeare
summer season, featuring five different plays, kicks off tomorrow,
and runs until March 2018. Hania Douglas, Te Karere.
