Here we have six forty-feet containers and these containers hold 1,400 pieces from a Chinese temple. In the exhibition, not only the temple itself is important but also the journey made by its 1,400 components. Towards the end of the Cultural Revolution this temple was practically a ruin and only later was it bought, I believe, by a monument conservationist. He transported this to another location, about 400 kilometres away. There Ai Weiwei saw it, bought it and then disassembled it and now it is being reconstructed here at the 21er Haus. The temple was a ritual site, it was a temple an important ancestral hall, but through it being disassembled and its relocation to Vienna it has now become an artwork.
