Hartford’s first annual Fringe Theatre to debut

TO LEARN MORE, GO TO YOU RLIGHTINGSOURCE.COM. TERESA: HARTFORD’S FIRST CELEBRATION OF THEATER, DANCE, MUSIC, AND COMEDY STARTS NEXT WEEK. SARAH: IT IS THE HARTFORD FRINGE FESTIVAL AT THE CARRIAGE HOUSE THEATER. HERE IS JEFFREY. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE FESTIVAL IS ALL ABOUT. WHAT DOES FRINGE MEAN? TO GIVE YOUR STORY A LITTLE HISTORY, THE BIG FESTIVAL IS IN EDINBURGH. 80 YEARS AGO, THERE WERE INVITATIONS FROM CERTAIN THEATER GROUPS TO PERFORM THERE. OTHER GROUPS DID NOT GET AN INVITATION. THEY DECIDED TO DO THEIR SHOW ALONG THE PERIMETER OF THE FESTIVAL. TERESA: THE FRINGE. YOU ARE BRINGING THAT TO THE CAPITAL CITY. I HAVE BEEN WAITING TO DO THIS FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS, AND IT IS ABOUT TIME TO DO IT. I DECIDED TO PUT IT TOGETHER. TERESA: IT IS HAPPENING NEXT WEEKEND, RUNNING FOR 10 DAYS. WHAT KIND OF ACTS CAN WE EXPERIENCE? THERE ARE A LOT OF ACTS FROM CONNECTICUT AND A FEW FROM NEW YORK CITY AND MAINE AND BOSTON. YOU WILL GET THEATER SHOWS, COMEDY FROM THE GREATER HARTFORD AREA, DANCE PERFORMANCES, PHYSICAL THEATER PERFORMANCES, A MUSICAL FROM NEW YORK. IT IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. SARAH: IT SOUNDS REALLY COOL. DO YOU SEE A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT ACTS ON ONE OF THE DAYS OR A COUPLE OF THE DAYS? WE ARE STARTING WITH A COUPLE OF SHOWS ON THE FIRST DAY. ON THE WEEKENDS, IT IS ABOUT SEVEN OR EIGHT SHOWS. YOU WILL GET TO PAY FOR WHAT SHOWS YOU WANT TO GO TO YOUR THIS IS OUR FIRST YEAR. WE ARE STILL LEARNING AND GETTING ALL THE KINKS OUT OF THE STRUCTURE OF IT. NEXT YEAR, WE WILL DO A FLEX PASS WHERE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO BUY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TICKETS AND GO TO ANY SHOW YOU WANT TO. THIS FIRST YEAR, WE ARE STILL WORKING THE STRUCTURE OUT. TERESA: THERE IS A COMPETITION IF I UNDERSTAND CORRECTLY. YES, THE AUDIENCE WILL BE VOTING FOR THE SHOW THEY LIKE WITH COINS. WE WILL PUT THEM IN A JAR. THOSE SHOWS THAT GET THE MOST POINTS WILL BE ONE OF THE THREE BEST OF THE FESTIVAL SHOWS THAT WILL PERFORM AGAIN ON NOVEMBER 1. SARAH: WITH THIS BEING A CELEBRATION OF ARTISTS ON THE FRINGE, IT FEELS LIKE IT IS GIVING A LOT OF PEOPLE THE CHANCE TO SHOW THEIR TALENTS. YES, A LOT OF NEW PLAYWRIGHTS OR ACTORS OR DIRECTORS WHO HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE AND WANT TO DIRECT, THIS GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT IS THEIR OWN AND WITHOUT ANY KIND OF CENSORSHIP. WE WANT IT TO BE A PLATFORM FOR ANY NEW ARTISTS THAT WANT TO DO SOMETHING. TERESA: WHEN DID YOU PUT THE CALL OUT FOR PERFORMERS? JANUARY WE PUT THE WORD OUT ON FACEBOOK. IT WAS STILL KIND OF TOUGH BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE DID NOT KNOW WHAT FRINGE WAS. WE HAD TO REALLY WORK THE PHONES AND GET PEOPLE INVOLVED. WE HAD A GREAT COUPLE OF ACTS. ANCHOR: SARAH: IT IS A GREAT LOCATION. IT IS REALLY INTIMATE AND NICE AND THE RIGHT KIND OF SHOW FOR THAT SPACE. HOPEFULLY NEXT YEAR, THAT WILL EXPAND TO A FEW OTHER VENUES IN THE AREA. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE IT IS ALL IN WALKING DISTANCE TO THE FESTIVAL. TERESA: IS THERE SOMETHING YOU ARE LOOKING FOR TWO? I HATE TO BRAG, BUT I HAVE A SHOW IN THE FESTIVAL. IT IS A COMEDY DONE IN THE SEATTLE FRINGE 20 YEARS AGO. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF OTHER SHOWS. THERE ARE TWO SHOWS TASTE ON AN HISTORICAL FIGURE NAMED VITTORIO WOODHALL. IT IS KIND OF THE OIL AND WATER. SARAH: TELL US THE WEBSITE. HA RTFORDFRINGEFESTIVAL.ORG.
