I AM THEATRE: Nilo Cruz

I was working at a hospital in Miami, Florida called Cedars of Lebanon doing physical therapy. And one day, I had this urge to go to the theatre. I went to the Coconut Grove and saw a play called “The Dresser”. The next day, I was totally a transformed person and I felt like I couldn’t do anything else but surrender to the art form of the theatre.
I didn’t know if I was going to become a writer, an actor or a director but I knew I had to be a part of theatre. It was a very spiritual moment for me and ever since it has been a spiritual moment, the process of writing a play. I start with characters and I sort of let these characters lead me on a journey. I sort of let myself be taken and be surprised by their journey and the world they live in. You sort of make a connection with another dimension that is not terrestrial at all. So it is, in some ways, the best way to describe it is, like a little miracle. I am Nilo Cruz and I AM THEATRE.
