Pop Up Highlights Pittsburgh’s Importance In Commercial Movie Theater History

HISTORICAL CITY OF PITTSBURGH IS HOSTING. WE HAVE THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THIS POP UP SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA FOR PITTSBURGH TO TELL US MORE ABOUT THE BACKGROUND. SO WE REALLY WANTED TO BE ABLE TO SHINE A LIGHT ON WHY PITTSBURGH IS SO IMPORTANT TO THE MOVIE INDUSTRY. IT WAS PRETTY MUCH BORN HERE. THEY TOOK THEIR PROJECTOR AND WERE OPEN FROM 8:00 A.M. TO MIDNIGHT AND SHOWED THE CONTINUOUS PROGRAMMING OF MOVIES AND CHARGED JUST A NICKEL AND THAT’S REALLY THE BIRTH PLACE OF THE MOVIE INDUSTRY. THAT’S REALLY COOL. YOU GUYS HAVE A MORE PERMANENT HOME TOO? YEAH, WE USED TO BE LOCATED OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO AND MOVED HERE IN 2016 AND MOVED CLOSE TO THE HEINZ CENTER. SO PEOPLE ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE PUBLIC FACE AND THEY ALSO HAVE A 9 STORY ARCHIVES BUILDING ON PENN AVENUE, SO WE MOVED THREE TRAILERS TRUCKS HERE LAST YEAR AND WE OCCUPY PART OF THE SPACE. SO WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO SEE THERE? WE’RE ESSENTIALLY DOING WHAT THEY DID IN 1905. THEY NEVER THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA LAST. THEY JUST THREW UP THE PROJECTOR AND SHOWED MOVIES AND THAT’S WHAT WE’RE DOING. SO WE ARE GOING TO INSTALL THE MOVIES HERE AND WE ARE SHOWING “THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY” AND “THE TRIP TO THE MOON.” SO THESE ARE PART OF THE AIR ARCHIVES. AND WE HAVE THE BIRTH PLACE INDUSTRY AND OUR ARCHIVES ARE NATIONAL AND MANY PLACES THAT HAVE BEEN LOST OR DEMOLISHED, WE HAVE MILLIONS OF IMAGES AND BLUE PRINTS AND ALL OF THE EARLIER TRADE JOURNALS FROM THE THEATER INDUSTRY AND CARPET AND SEAT SAMPLES. IF IT’S ABOUT THE SOCIAL RELEVANCE OF THEATER BUILDINGS, WE HAVE IT. PART OF OUR MISSION IS ABOUT PROMOTING THAT PEOPLE SHOULD SAVE THEATERS AND WHAT BETTER PLACE TO SHOW THAT BY RESTORING AND SAVING THE HISTORIC THEATERS. SO THESE BIG THINGS WERE THE REASON AND HAVING A GREAT PARTNER WAS VERY IMPORTANT AS WELL. ARE THEATERS AT RISK? OH, ABSOLUTELY. SO WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT PLACES BEING SAVED AND YOU THINK ABOUT A BUILDING IN THE 1920’S, IF WE DON’T SAVE THEM SOON, WE’LL BE PAST THE POINT OF NO RETURN. SO IF PEOPLE WANT TO COME TO THE POP-UP SHOP, HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? A NICKEL? WELL, IT’S A NICKEL, BUT WE CERTAINLY WON’T TURN PEOPLE AWAY IF THEY DON’T HAVE A NICKEL OR IF THEY WANT TO SUPPORT OUR WORK AND PAY MORE. WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT PEOPLE WILL BE EXCITED TO LEARN? WELL, WE HAVE SUCH A CONNECTION WITH PITTSBURGH AND THE THEATER CONNECTION. THIS GOES BACK TO THE EARLIEST DAYS AND I MEAN THE WARNER BROTHERS STARTED HERE AND METRO PICTURES STARTED IN PITTSBURGH. PITTSBURGH, THERE’S A SECRET CONNECTION FOR EVERYTHING, BUT PARTICULARLY FOR THE FILM INDUSTRY. THIS IS A NICE HOMECOMING FOR YOU TOO? IT’S NICE TO BE HOME.
