‘Talking Heads’ is a series of monologues
written by Alan Bennett in the 1980s. Originally written for television, the ‘talking heads’ in these monologues are complex, funny and incredibly entertaining. So it’s like a sort of contradiction in terms really to call them ‘talking heads’, because they are not just ‘talking heads’, there’s a whole world, there’s a whole life in there. Each of them is completely separate and very distinct from the other. He creates utterly different worlds and utterly different characters. I think he’s a national treasure because he has the ability to put a spotlight on a very particular part of British life. I think there is something for everybody
to recognise, wherever you are. And although they are a period piece in a way, they are of their time, they do resonate equally now.
