The transformation scene is certainly very impressive but even more so is Griffin Dunne's transformation into a corpse. I also think that Dick Smith's make up in THE EXORCIST is incredible. Linda Blair's transformation is truly amazing, but again, the often overlooked age work on Max von Sydow is so impressive, all the more so because the elderly actor actually looks very much today like the old man he played 45 years ago. Reply Jade Lee November 2, 2018 YAAAAAAASSS Number 1 is so well deserved Reply steve gale November 4, 2018 The Glenn Close Albert Nobbs character was a women. The whole point of the film was that a woman had to pretend to be a man to get any where in that period. Reply CRiv215 November 27, 2018 I agree with the #1 one pic but I definitely think The Fly & The Elephant Man should have been at been at least been 2 & 3 on this list. Reply Ashley D November 29, 2018 I know it came out after this video was made, but Star Trek Beyond's alien makeup was incredible. They invented new makeup and techniques, they used fibre optics for Karl, 50+ unique aliens and I will forever be salty about the oscars… Reply Theatre squad 2003 December 13, 2018 Grinpayne from the man who laughs. It’s simple but effective Reply Laurie Lacomb December 28, 2018 How about Gary Old man in Dracula Reply Serena Smuckers December 29, 2018 All 3 men in To Wong Foo… Reply Sabria MUA December 30, 2018 As a aspiring makeup artist, I'm fansicnated by how the history of movie makeup/sfx transformations 😄😄🤗 Reply TheJlook2000 January 4, 2019 Tim Curry – Legend Reply C. Ortiz January 6, 2019 In all honesty I was a bit shocked when "Tootsie" for a man to women transformation was chosen for the top 10 of all time when there are actually quite a few that I strongly believe should have been chosen . So then it got me thinking how about a top 5 or 10 of the best gender transformation of all time! :] . Now that would totally be amazing & I would be more than grateful for the acceptance of a devoted fans request <3 One last thing here are just a few ideas of films in case forgotten…"To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything Love Julie Newmar" , Doubtfire, Dallas Buyers Club, Victor Victoria, etc…Thanks for your time & hope to hear back with good news, until next time. Reply SpenceRina January 6, 2019 That Fly one! I'm happy it got mentioned. I remember watching the movie as a kid and being completely disgusted at the transformation. They did an amazing job. Reply Jenna van der Merwe January 11, 2019 The transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London. Classic. Reply Alaska Marleau January 20, 2019 The Grinch Jim Carrey Reply W. Russell January 31, 2019 I think Dustin Hoffman in "Little Big Man" deserved a mention. He was aged from a teenager to a 100 year-old man. He also made the movie when he was in his twenties so they had to make him look both younger and 80 years older than he was. Reply Dom Ex February 3, 2019 Have you seen the rammestien video for kiene Lust Reply Thomas Bush February 7, 2019 ummm…obviously Mrs Doubtfire?? Reply Double Barrel Podcast February 9, 2019 Marlon Brando in godfather was more than a paint job. Dick Smith used a thick latex paste called wrinkle stipple. You brush or sponge it on to stretched skin and powder it in thin layers. When you release the stretched skin, it is wrinkled. Then you paint over it. Reply Agent JWH February 24, 2019 rami malek, freddie mercury Reply Bill Fisher March 1, 2019 the magical makeup for THE WIZARD OF OZ. Reply Eric Dew April 6, 2019 I guess Vice came out after making this list, because Bale's Cheney was pretty damn impressive. Reply Anthony Brownrigg June 1, 2019 Id say american werewolf in london should be here Reply Nate DS June 2, 2019 Playing don corleone probably made Brando feel old Reply lestatdelc June 8, 2019 Sorry, but you guys totally missed the boat by not mentioning at all, much less not giving the top spot to Rick Baker for changing Eddie Murphy into the old jewish guy in "Coming to America". Shame on you. Reply Bob Mwangi June 19, 2019 I think 'Avatar' and 'Lord Of The Rings' should have been on this list, too- at the very least as honourable mentions. Reply Luke Cague June 20, 2019 I have to be the only person who critiques and praises performances regularly that thinks Charlize Theron was not that great in Monster. I think she is overrated in this role. Reply Carmybel June 22, 2019 Mrs. Doubtfire without a “doubt “. We miss you Mr. Willams. Reply Darojat June 26, 2019 How about transformation of Clark Kent into Superman?? That was freakin great!! Nobody knows unless Louis Lane! Reply True hope2 June 27, 2019 Raven ❤❤❤ Reply Tammy Ryder June 28, 2019 sorry Hoffman did NOT look like a woman.he looked just like he wad supposed to….like a man trying to pass as a woman. Truly ground-breaking at the time.Rick Baker’s unbelievable wolf transformation in An American Werewolf In London. Still a Masterpiece Of practical effectsPretty much everything Rob Bottin creates for John Carpenter’s The Thing Reply Chris Terman July 6, 2019 "Darkness" in Legend (Tim Curry) easily smashes any of these choices … you guys missed one! https://youtu.be/a3J91bPrW9A?t=0 Reply Izzy Moten July 7, 2019 You forgot the orcs/Uruk-hai from LOTR! (Not the crappy CGI ones in the hobbit) Reply TheAlphahyena July 7, 2019 I never watched "Monster", but now…I can't believe that was Charlize Theron. She disappeared in that role. I saw this clip and it's just … WOW! Reply lorenzo meloni July 7, 2019 Griffin Dunne in An American Werewolf in London Reply Gordon Rice July 9, 2019 Fredric March as Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde. The makeup used by Basil Rathbone as the music performer in Adventures of Sherlock Holmes… a completely unrecognizable performance! Michael Caine's performance as Inspector Dopple in Sleuth. Dustin Hoffman as the 100 + year old Jack Crabb in Little Big Man. Vincent Price in a hideous mask and makeup scene at the final moments of House of Wax. And John Lone's totally convincing makeup as the title character in Iceman Reply Radical Rainbow July 13, 2019 John Hurt should have won the Oscar for the Elephant Man Reply Leah July 13, 2019 Christian Bale as Cheney Reply Victor Seastrom July 13, 2019 It's absurd to arbitrarily state as fact that these are the Top Ten Make-Ups of All Time. These are all great but there are so many ground-breaking make-ups. Fredrick March in Jekyll and Hyde, The Creature from the Black Lagoon., Karloff in The Mummy… etc. Reply Oliver Emerson July 15, 2019 Lon Chaney Senior, so many transformations that deserve recognition. Reply Vale cruz July 17, 2019 Guillermo del toro 👌👏 Reply Ayesha Khalid July 18, 2019 Am I missing something or Jim Carrey is actually nowhere in this video..? Reply Kiki d Chiwah July 22, 2019 The young looking Bruce Willis in "Surrogates" was pretty good, as well as Aaliyah's in "Queen of the Damned". And "Tu Wong Foo" with Swayze, Snipes, and Jon Leguizamo all in drag was great! Reply Noelle O'Brien July 28, 2019 If only this list was made 4 years later, so he could honor shape of water’s amazing creature makeup Reply But I'm scared of the dark! July 29, 2019 The Elephant Man made me cry multiple times. Hard to watch… Reply Troy D. Davidson July 30, 2019 "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" Cicely Tyson's makeup…incredible! Reply solomon kane July 30, 2019 There is a takeshi miiki Yakuza film where a torture victim is suspended by six fish hooks tortured and finally has boiling oil thrown in his face. It took twelve hours to apply the make up and twelve hours to shoot. He had to hang there the whole time. Reply Cliff Moore August 1, 2019 Although it wasn't a movie, I thought Val Kilmer's drug guru in Entourage was a great make up job Reply HighFlyer August 2, 2019 Harry and the Hendersons? Reply Richard Kilroy August 2, 2019 Great post. I haven't gone through all of the comments but I'm certain this has been pointed out: LEGEND – Rob Bottin's amazing work on Darkness – and Tim Curry should be mentioned – not as honorable, but at the top. Reply Robert Byrd August 2, 2019 For everyone who didn't like Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique as much as the first actress, I believe you are all correct. It's not that she looks bad, it's the fact that the original makeup for that part was a long and tedious to apply, and much sexier looking. I'm not sure why they changed it, but there you go. Reply Robert Byrd August 2, 2019 There are literally tons of great makeup, prosthetics, etc. that are done so well, you wouldn't know about them if someone didn't tell you. My respect to all of them! Cheers! Reply devilish84 August 4, 2019 I really don't like Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique… Rebecca Romijn make up is flawless, it looks like realistic, whereas Lawrence's one really does look awful, kinda cheap & not even a little bit realistic! Reply currypac August 5, 2019 The Diary of MissJane PittmanCicily Tyson Reply michael stammberger August 6, 2019 there are sooo many better movie make-up transformations than marlon brando in the godfather. linda blair in the exorcist as example or Salieri in Amadeus both done by dick smith as well but much better than the godfather make-up! Reply Cydonia2020 August 8, 2019 Baron Harkonnen in the original Dune. Reply Samantha Harper August 9, 2019 Gary Oldman in Hanibal. Reply Bob Kessler August 10, 2019 Dick Smith's transformation of F. Murray Abraham into old Salieri deserved and honorable mention. Reply Fish August 11, 2019 Fish Reply Stacy Lewis August 15, 2019 Nice picks! The only one I would have like to have seen included was Salieri from "Amadeus", but have to admit that Doug Jones well deserves first place. Reply Al Limone August 16, 2019 Danny Devito as the Penguin in BATMAN RETURNS Reply Cameron James August 16, 2019 Brooo as if lotr doesn't get even a mention!!!! Reply Isabelle Gilleard October 9, 2019 THE GRINCH Reply KJ Moore October 13, 2019 Great list, although (personal opinion) "The Elephant Man" probably deserves the top spot. The makeup was so profound and so complete, that when John Hurt showed up on set for the first day of filming in the prostheses, the entire cast and crew were completely stunned into silence. Reply Dark Angel October 21, 2019 The Suspiria remake should be on here! The make-up was robbed at the Oscars! Reply laura gardner October 27, 2019 there is a strange touching intimate beauty in physical differences. most people will never understand because they are not strong enough to look unto the eye and the soul of the different. Reply Patrick W. Dunne November 12, 2019 "The most classic gender swap of them all: Tootsie" Some Like It Hot: Am I a joke to you? Reply Joseph Izzo November 27, 2019 For Frankenstein, he also used color, a green hue. He also, stated that he wouldn’t use the design if it didn’t work in real life. Walked around the studio and was so scary, when a woman saw him, she ran the other way. Reply finao o December 7, 2019 It's hard to know where to draw the line between makeup and mask. Reply Scott Smith December 20, 2019 Johnny Knoxville in Bad Grandpa? Reply Trista Johnson December 29, 2019 My only complaint is that Rick Baker only got an honorable mention. I wouldn't have pursued makeup artistry if it wasn't for him and he is a true legend. Reply Add a Comment Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
