Toronto City Hall – On Location 360°

– The story of Toronto City
Hall is an interesting one. Mayor Nathan Phillips, for whom the square we
are standing in is named, wanted a new, iconic location after Old City Hall was out of use. He held a giant architectural contest, the largest of the time in the world. Finnish architect Viljo Revell ended up having the winning design even though it was first
thrown into the reject pile. Its welcoming nature isn’t
usually what you see on film. It’s often used as a
science fiction building in shows like “Star Trek:
The Next Generation,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It’s probably best known
as Raccoon City Hall in “Resident Evil:
Apocalypse,” when it explodes. My favorite though is an
Italian exploitation movie called “Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century,” where you see that yeti
run through the square after he’s climbed the Sheraton Tower.
